Today, I updated both of my WordPress websites to version 4.7 (the update is titled “Vaughan”). Unfortunately, on both occasions, the update seemed to time out and my wp-admin panel stopped working.
Whenever I attempted to access my wp-admin panel, the site returned a 500 status code, along with the message:
Website currently unable to handle this request.
Hmm… that’s not good.
Fortunately, I managed to fix this issue by renaming my WordPress plugins folder to something else such as “plugins_renamed” or “plugins_disabled”. I then refreshed the wp-admin page and was prompted to update my database.
From there on out, the update went successfully. I was then redirected back to the main admin page, where WordPress displayed errors about files being missing. To fix this, I simply renamed my plugins folder back to “plugins”.
Hopefully, this article saved somebody a lot of frustration and stress!
