In the world of TikTok, the acronym FYP stands for “For You” Page.
The video app, which has exploded since its launch in 2017, has a popular section called “For You”.
This “For You” page is where TikTok’s algorithm shows users videos that it thinks they will like.
It is basically a feed of videos that might interest you.
At some point in time, TikTok creators started to use the hashtags #foryourpage and #fyp in their video captions. In their mind, these hashtags would explicitly tell the TikTok algorithm to push their videos onto people’s “For You” pages.
Eventually, the trend caught on and the acronym FYP became synonymous with videos going viral. This is because creators believed that their videos would “die” if they didn’t include this hashtag.
What does it mean when somebody comments FYP on your video?
If someone comments FYP on your TikTok video, it means that they think the video is good enough to go viral. It is like a “vote of confidence” that goes beyond simply liking your video. They believe that more people should see it.
More often than not, you will see these comments on videos that do not include the #fyp hashtag. The commenter, in this case, is trying to compensate for your omission.
All in all, it is a friendly comment from someone who clearly likes your video.
Does using FYP as a hashtag actually work?
No. Using the #fyp or #foryourpage hashtags does not work.
Well, at least not anymore.
If you pay attention to the videos being displayed on your “For You” feed, you will see that many of these videos do not contain the hashtag.
Similarly, there are also thousands and thousands of unpopular videos out there that do have the hashtag. And most of them have only a handful of views.
This means that TikTok’s algorithm does not care about the hashtag. Instead, it uses other factors. Most likely, it uses a multitude of different signals to determine a video’s worth and who it should be shown to.
Will someone commenting FYP on my video make it go viral?
Although writing FYP in a comment has no effect, the act of commenting itself probably does. We will never truly know what TikTok’s algorithm is doing behind the scenes.
Furthermore, it is doubtful that they will ever release that kind of information.
However, if I were to make an educated guess, I would say that the algorithm does look at interactions to some extent. i.e. Comments and likes.
For example, if a video gets 12 interactions per 100 views, then it is probably a “better” video than one that only gets 3 interactions per 100 views.
And likes and comments are probably weighted differently. i.e. A comment could be worth 5 likes, etc.
In essence, this means that the FYP comment from a viewer might be taken into account. Not because of the words that it contained, but because the user decided to comment on your video in the first place.
Also, to prevent TikTok creators from getting their friends to spam the “fyp” comment, the algorithm probably only counts interactions from people who have watched the video in their For You feed.
Hopefully, this article cleared a few things up for you! Good luck with your video.
